Blue Apron Meal Review #1

In case you missed the first post in this series, I decided to give a few meal delivery subscription services, Plated, Hello Fresh, Blue Apron, and Home Chef a try and see how they worked out. Head back here and here to see what’s going on.

Blue Apron Meal Review #1: Chicken and Sage Biscuit Pot Pie with Cremini Mushrooms and Purple Top Turnip

Preparation:  Minimal.  Poaching chicken and chopping veggies.

Easy-to-follow directions for poaching the chicken were included, if you’re not familiar with how to do it.  While the chicken poached, I chopped the veggies and began cooking them.

Once the veggies were cooked, I followed the directions to finish up the filling.

Then, I mixed up the biscuit mix and dropped it on top as instructed.

The pot pie went in the oven for about 10 minutes to cook the biscuits and then was ready to eat.

Ease:

Easy, but more constant cooking (less downtime) due to the complexity of the recipe.  Not a bad thing, but may be more time consuming for a slower/less familiar cook.  It took me about 35 minutes start to finish.

Taste:

Delish.  It’s still chilly here, and this dish screamed comfort food.  The cremini mushrooms and turnips added a little something extra to elevate this from the standard chicken pot pie, and the sage in the biscuits was fantastic.  I’ll be using fresh sage in my biscuits more often!  The kiddo loved this one as well.

Serving Size:

Very generous—this was easily 3-4 grown-up servings.

Overall impression:

Great comfort food.  I also love that this is a family-friendly pot meal, but with a more gourmet twist.
